Center For Family Representation
116 John Street
19th Floor
New York, NY 10038
The Center for Family Representation (CFR), a law and policy organization, seeks an innovative
and energetic individual to fill an immediate opening for a Litigation Supervisor.
CFR's mission is to insure that every family that can remain safely together has the opportunity
to do so. We accomplish this by providing legal and social work assistance to parents
whose children are at risk of foster care placement, by training more than 500 professionals
each year in the city and state, and by advocating at the city, state and national level for
policies that promote parent engagement and family preservation.
The Litigation Supervisor's primary responsibility will be to supervise 5-6 attorney staff of
varying degrees of experience who work in a court based interdisciplinary team representing parents
in child protective and termination of parental rights proceedings in Manhattan Family Court.
The team will also be comprised of social work staff, paralegal staff and parent advocates (parents
who have successfully reunified with their children). Teams are co-directed by Litigation
and SW Supervisors. The Litigation Supervisor reports to the Deputy Director.
Objectives of the teams include shortening lengths of stay for children in foster care, promoting
quality visiting arrangements and insuring that families receive services that are well-tailored to
expediting safe and lasting reunification. CFR's team model was recently chosen by the
City of New York to be replicated in Manhattan Family Court to serve nearly 800 families per year.
The Litigation Supervisor will be responsible for developing and coordinating intake schedules for
attorney staff, working closely with Manhattan family court staff and staff from the Administration
for Children's Services legal division and the Manhattan law guardian providers to address substantive
and operational issues that attend a large court based practice. The supervisor will also
assist in supervising paralegals and interns, and in developing our fellowship program.
A portion of the Litigation Supervisor's time will be devoted to conducting training and policy reform
work. Professional development for the Litigation Supervisor will include management and
supervisory skill building, quality assurance and increasing responsibility for strategic planning and
overall program development at CFR.
Applicants must be admitted to practice law in the State of New York and have a minimum of four-six
years experience in Article 10/TPR family court practice. Applicants must also be able to
demonstrate some supervisory and/or mentoring experience. Experience with organizational
development as well as with ancillary proceedings, such as support and custody, public benefits, housing
and immigration, and fluency in Spanish are all desirable. Applicants must have strong
interpersonal and communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team and a desire to share
in both the exhilaration and challenges of a growing endeavor.
